Bali is the most popular island holiday destination in the Indonesian archipelago, with good reason. Part of the Indonesian paradise that feels like a fantasy, Bali has a picture postcard like beauty. Soak up the sun on a stretch of fine white sand, or commune with the tropical creatures. Bali is known for its forested volcanic mountains, iconic rice paddies, beaches and coral reefs. The island is home to religious sites such as the cliffside Uluwatu Temple. To the south, the beachside city of Kuta has lively bars, while Seminyak, Sanur and Nusa Dua are popular resort towns.
The exquisite hill town of Ubud, in the uplands of Bali, is a center for traditional crafts and dance. The surrounding Ubud District’s rainforest and terraced rice paddies, dotted with Hindu temples and shrines, are among Bali’s most iconic landscapes. Ancient holy sites include the Tirta Empul temple complex, intricately carved Goa Gajah (“Elephant Cave”) and Gunung Kawi with its rock-cut shrines.
Bali is a favorite destination for both adventurers and those in need of a little relaxation. The waters off the coast of Bali's white beaches are an ideal spot for diving, while the dense jungles, teeming with monkeys and hidden stone temples, call out for exploration. Hike the rugged path to the summit of Mount Batur, and your effort will be rewarded with a stunning view. Then coax your sore muscles back into action with a massage at one of Bali's many luxury spas. The island is also known for its yoga and meditation retreats.
