March, Full of rituals and respect, Thailand’s most celebrated festival is an experience to savour at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort. See in the New Year with traditional Thai customs including merit-making at local temples, offering food to the Buddhist monks, blessings at spirit houses built to honor the spirits of the land and water pouring on Buddha statues; an iconic ritual for this holiday representing purification and the washing away of sins and bad luck.
As a way of showing respect, young locals often practice water pouring over the palms of elders’ hands, however, what this holiday is most known for amongst visitors is its water festival. Celebrated in true elephant style at Anantara Golden Triangle, our gentle giants join in the water fun creating plenty of chances for guests to get wet and cool down from the summer heat.
Celebrations start on Wednesday 13th April with a long-drum parade that takes you around the resort grounds with Buddha replicas placed along the way for traditional bathing ceremonies. The day’s celebrations culminate in a traditional northern style Khantoke dinner in the tropical surrounds of the open air Sala Mae Nam Restaurant. Feast on Geang Hung Lay – Northern style braised pork with local spices and tamarind, spicy beef curry with lemongrass and mixed rice dumplings with sweet coconut.
The following two days are gently infused with local Thai fun that take in all the traditions of the region in a visitor-friendly way, including a sand pagoda presentation to nine temples in Chiang Saen, a tour of the local ancient town and a monk blessing ceremony back in the comfort of our Elephant Bar.
Enjoy the most celebrated festival of the year at Anantara Golden Triangle, enveloped in the height of Thai hospitality, charming local traditions and the soothing vista across the hills of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.
