FHRAI to support the Tourism Ministry’s vision to increase India’s share in International Tourist

The hospitality industry’s apex body, Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) supports the Tourism Ministry’s target to increase FTAs in 2016 by 11.37 MLN, DTVs in 2016 by 1496 MLN with additional requirement of 23.4 lakh Rooms in 2016 (Over 2010) and an additional employment through 24.48 MLN tourism in 2016 (over 2010) with Foreign Exchange Earnings of Rs.134665 Cr in 2016 (US$ 30.3 BLN).

To create a roadmap for the same, the theme of 47th Annual Convention of FHRAI which is going to be held in Goa from September 6 to 8 is also bearing the theme of ‘Employment Generation’.

Currently, the size of industry is pegged at 11.2 billion USD, with 6.29 million Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTA) and foreign exchange earnings of 11.394 billion USD. The industry’s contribution in India’s GDP is 5.92% (in 2011) which is expected to be at 7.3% in 2012. The industry also contributes 9.24% employment in the country with 53 million people employed.

FHRAI estimates that the Government shall increase the industry’s contribution to GDP at 7.8% by 2022. Moreover, the enhanced GDP shall be creating approximately 37 million direct & indirect new jobs. The Tourism Minister’s vision for 2016 states that 11.37 million foreign tourist arrivals (FTA) shall take place, along with 1496 million domestic tourist visits (DTVs), which the FHRAI shall support.

Mr Kamlesh Barot, President (FHRAI), said, “There are many impending issues hurting the growth of the Indian hospitality industry. The issues including, high taxes on tourism and moral policing due to archaic laws are primary issues among many. Moreover, high interest rates, inflation, lack of provisions for hospitality under infrastructure policies, sanitation, Airport & Tourist services, licensing, lack of trained manpower, exporter status, visa issues and the laws pertaining to the land acquisition for projects are also the areas of concern.”

Mr Vivek Nair, Honorary Secretary (FHRAI), said, “The hospitality industry has a huge manpower requirement and there will be a scope for additional employment generation in this industry. On the lines of our Tourism Ministry’s vision, the theme of Goa Convention has been kept as ‘Employment Generation’. There will be industry leaders chalking out the strategy and plans of realizing our goals.”

FHRAI has been raising several issues with the Central and State governments on taxation, licensing and other impending issues to improve the industry’s growth and development.
