Rising trend of Indian travelers in South Africa

The South African Tourism hosted a four-city initiative offering travel agents in Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai a chance to interact with a variety of suppliers. Hotel chains, airlines, products, attractions, destination management companies and local tourism offices keen on networking and deal-making with Indian agents, have brought to the table a host of exciting updates.

South African Tourism noted an increased length-of- stay, average spend and an overall increase in arrivals from India in 2016

Even amidst demonetisation woes and a generally gloomy travel outlook towards the third quarter of last year, the Indian market has shown good numbers for South Africa during 2016. The destination closed 2016 on a successful note, noting a 27% growth in arrivals that clocked at 81,429 by the end of the third quarter.

Overall spends from India crossed an astounding ZAR 1,100,000,000 by the end of the third quarter and average spend per leisure traveller was placed at INR 590,000 (approx. ZAR 150,000) indicating that destination South Africa attracts a variety of pocket-sizes. Market intelligence delivered by trade partners tells the tourism board that the destination sells to travellers with an INR 1.5 lakh budget as effectively as it appeals to travellers with 10.5 lakh budget.

“We want to sustain this growth and also attract return travellers. Going forward, we are going to focus on increasing the geographical scope of the market – our biggest sources are Mumbai and Delhi, followed by Bangalore and Chennai,” said Hanneli Slabber, country manager, South African Tourism – India.

The fact that Indian travellers are delving deeper, exploring wider and also making second and third visits to the destination works conveniently in line with South Africa’s recently launched a campaign – wow in every moment – that has kicked off earlier this year. “Indian travellers are becoming very aware of their personal tastes and often even within a family or group of friends who travel together, there are multiple preferences. This campaign showcases our ability to surpass the expectations of every segment and every type of traveller. It also entices repeat visitors by reminding them that there is so much more to see, feel, taste and experience in South Africa.” Slabber added.

Below lies the Travel Trend Report shared by South African Tourism

The top favourite Cape Town & Western Cape

Cape Town receives the biggest chunk of leisure business from India. The local tourism office is working with the consumer via all our divisions ie tourism, trade, investment, films. In December Cape Town & Western Cape Tourism hosted a Bollywood Crew showcasing all the  prominent location spots, spreading into the regions for showcasing.

1. What do Indian travellers do in Cape Town & Western Cape?

Cape Town is India's favourite. They enjoy the amazing vibe of the city, party at Long Street, hike up or cable car it up to Table Mountain to enjoy the view, shop and play at the V&A waterfront and also explore more of Western Cape as they drive down the scenic garden route, go in search of whales and sharks in Hermanus.

2. What new experiences would you like them to know about?

Rush Trampoline Park has over 30,000 square feet of adventure, excitement and challenges. Perfect for all ages, the wall-to-wall, interconnected trampolines will get your heart pumping and your face smiling. Inside the park they have over 17,000 square feet of trampolines, 2 dodgeball courts,3 basketball lanes, a gigantic foam pit, 2 tumble lanes, a free-fall stunt jump foam pit a battle beam and a fidget ladder. www.rushsa.co.za

Maze World is a new addition to kiddy heaven at Imhoff Farm as kid can now enjoy maze fun and learn about the world of wildlife conservation at the same time. Built by former game ranger and conservation enthusiast Ian Pletzer, the double-storey installation features riddles that participants need to solve to complete the maze. Along the way mazers also get to learn about conservation efforts in Southern African countries like Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

GONOW Electric Bike Tours allows for guided tours of the Peninsula on self-powered, electric bicycles. The custom electric bikes mean that they do all the work for you, no legwork! You can choose Camps Bay/ Clifton or the Promenade/Waterfront which are an hour long or the Antlantic Seaboard Tour that’s 2 hours long www.gonowtours.co.za

New and exciting

Oudtshoorn & De Rust

1. How many Indians do you get in Oudtshoorn & De Rust?

Indian stats for Oudtshoorn and De Rust area for 2016 will be approx 26 061 definitely an growth in numbers from previous years.

2. What have Indians been doing in Plettenberg Oudtshoorn & De Rust?

Mostly big adventure attractions like Cango Caves, Ostrich Farms, Cango Wildlife Ranch and Buffelsdrift Game Lodge activities like feeding the African elephants or walking with the elephants.

3. What new products and experiences would you like them to know about?

We have a fresh new adventure activity called Cango Caves Zipline, close by to the Cango Caves, it's a double zipline (two people can go together at once). Also something new will be the Historical Tour walks in the CBD area of Oudtshoorn. The walk is about the beautiful sandstone buildings in town like the museums, ostrich palaces, etc.

Plettenberg

1. How many Indians do you get in Plettenberg?

During our high Indian season, we receive about 120-360 pax per month arriving by coach, i.e. just 3-6 coaches per month. However, our self-drive Indian market of mostly families is much greater, although we have no exact figures.

2. What have Indians been doing in Plettenberg?

The Indian market seems to enjoy animal sanctuaries, extreme adventures, as well as the unique shopping we have on offer in the Plet area. Local tourism products they visit include Ocean Blue whale watching, Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary, Bloukrans Bungy, Skydive Plett, Blackwater Tubing, Canopy Tours, Mill Mohair Shopping Centre, and Old Nick Shopping Village.

3. What new products and experiences would you like them to know about?

We would like them to be aware of Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve, a malaria free, Big 5 reserve. Visitors can enjoy a range of wildlife responsibly in their natural habitat, on game drives and even on horseback. Wildlife on the reserve includes among others elephant, lion, rhino, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, hippo, buffalo, wildebeest and crocodile.

Cemair, our local airline would also be of interest, with daily flights between Plettenberg Bay and Cape Town, Johannesburg, Margate and Bloemfontein. SAASA is busy building a primate sanctuary in KwaZulu Natal, 10 min from King Shaka airport. Monkeyland KZN will open its door to the public in December 2017.

Nelson Mandela Bay

1. How many Indians do you get in Nelson Mandela Bay?

As we don’t have an international airport and people enter through various entry and exit points it’s  difficult to establish the exact amount of Indian visitors to the city. In the past we used to get large amount of groups through the city mostly for the airport to fly either to Cape Town or back to Jhb. This is still the case however we have been successful in getting the groups to stay a bit longer as well as do more things in the city. With regards to the FIT market this is growing and the city is really popular as a FIT destination.

2. What do Indians do in Nelson Mandela Bay?

The focus is Port Elizabeth, which has always been used as an entrance or exit point for Indian travellers mostly due to group packages being sold to South Africa by trade. The city has a few offerings for large groups which include the famous Route 67 (Part of National Mandela Heritage Route) as well as our rich cultural experiences with Xhosa being the largest cultural group in the Eastern Cape. Very popular with groups is also a city tour including a stop at the Donkin Memorial mentioned above. The city however has a lot to offer the FIT market with various free experiences on offer as well.

Traditionally the Indian visitors that visit the city either come from Cape Town along the Garden Route or they start their Garden Route holiday from Port Elizabeth. Most of them visit a private game reserve or Addo Elephant National Park (only big 7 National Park in the world) before or after the Garden Route. This is probably the most ideal route to follow if you are visiting South Africa for the first time as you get to see the best of what South Africa has to offer.

3. What new products and experiences would you like them to know about?

Nelson Mandela Bay, home to Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch is the only metropolitan area that was allowed by the late president to bear his name. Traditionally not a lot was known about the city within the Indian tourism industry but this is changing. Indians are now starting to spend more time in the city. With the increased awareness of the city with Indian tourists the city has increased its numbers steadily with especially good growth in the FIT market. We have seen a huge increase in online and direct bookings from the Indian market with online booking channels reporting that India is the 3rd fastest growing market to the city. The city has a lot to offer FIT travellers especially with value add products such as the Nelson Mandela Bay Pass. The city really offers great value for money with a huge amount of activities and attractions on offer within close proximity. Port Elizabeth / Nelson Mandela Bay is still somewhat of an unknown in the market and thus products and experiences we would like the Indian media to know about is 2 key products. The only big 7 safari options in the world is a combination of our very special marine safari and the famous Big 5 safari. One can complete it all in one day. The Marine Safaris are normally 3 to 4 hours and starts in the morning allowing visitors to get back have lunch and then depart to either Addo Elephant National Park or a private game reserve before the traditional check in time at 14:00. Algoa Bay, our ocean, was declared an International Hope Spot for its Marine Biodiversity.

Port Elizabeth was also declared the Bottlenose Dolphin Capital in 2016 with research showing that approximately 29 500 Bottlenose dolphins used the Bay. Algoa bay includes a Marine Protected Area which forms part of Addo Elephant National Park making Addo the only Big 7 National Park in the world. The big 7 includes the traditional big 5 with the addition of the whale and the white shark. Addo also boasts the higest density of African Elephant in the world thus making it the best place to see African Elephants in the wild.

This is not all the Marine safari has to offer though it also has the largest breeding colonies of Cape Gannets and African Penguins in the World, with 22 000 African penguins 50% of the total population found in Algoa Bay in its natural habitat. Traditionally African Penguins did not occur on the main land of Africa and only since the 1970s new colonies were established along the Garden Route.

The Bay also has a total of 4 different dolphin species, 4 whale species (2 all year round), seals, various other rare marine birds as well as Killer whales (Orcas) visiting the bay. Underwater safaris are also popular with amongst others Sardine Run diving experiences and visits to our colourful reefs. Our reefs are very unique and colourful due to the high nutrient count in the waters created by the Alexandria Dune Fields which is also the largest Coastal Dune fields in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Pass, a smartcard access card, provides you with free admission to a variety of attractions and activities in and around Nelson Mandela Bay. This includes amongst others museums, game reserves, scuba diving, art galleries, sightseeing tours, various adventure activities and many more. It also entitles you to some great discounts in selected stores for shopping, activities, entertainment and more. Attractions and activities along the Garden Route is also included.
