16th ATOAI Convention Commences in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

The 16th Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) Convention commenced today in the picturesque town of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. With a central focus on Sustainable Tourism Development in India’s Border Regions, the convention aims to explore the immense potential of adventure tourism while fostering eco-conscious practices.

The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including Shri Pema Khandu, Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh; Shri Pasang Dorjee Sona, Tourism Minister of Arunachal Pradesh; Lt. Gen. Rakesh Kapoor, Deputy Chief of the Army Staff (IS & C); Ajeet Bajaj, President, ATOAI.

In his address, Shri Pema Khandu highlighted the importance of niche travel and adventure tourism in promoting local employment and economic growth. He called for Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models to develop world-class infrastructure, emphasizing Arunachal Pradesh’s potential as a premier adventure destination.

Shri Pasang Dorjee Sona underscored the state’s commitment to eco-tourism, inviting adventure operators to promote sustainable tourism initiatives. “We aim to showcase Arunachal Pradesh’s unique offerings and attract global adventurers to experience our state responsibly,” he added.

Lt. Gen. Rakesh Kapoor spoke about the dual need to showcase the pristine beauty of India’s border areas and empower local communities through sustainable development. He stressed the importance of avoiding overtourism and adopting responsible tourism practices.

The keynote session by Rohit Kapur, MD of Arthur D. Little, titled “Adventure Tourism: The Broader Footprint,” addressed the challenges and opportunities in adventure tourism, offering a roadmap for sustainable growth.

The convention also featured the ATOAI Awards 2024, recognizing excellence in adventure tourism. The awards honored trailblazers and visionaries for their contributions to sustainability, innovation, and community engagement.
