Meghalaya Honoured for Responsible Tourism Efforts, Committed to Preserving Natural and Cultural Heritage

Meghalaya, famously known as the "Abode of Clouds," enchants with its windswept mountains, lush green forests, and mesmerizing streams and waterfalls. The vibrant culture of the Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia tribes and their harmonious relationship with nature adds to the state’s charm. The living root bridges, crafted by local communities by weaving tree roots across streams, stand as a shining example of this cultural and ecological harmony. These extraordinary attractions, combined with the warm hospitality of the people, form the cornerstone of Meghalaya’s tourism appeal. The state’s unwavering commitment to responsible tourism has been recognized at the Indian Responsible Tourism State Awards (IRSTA) 2024.

Organized by Meghalaya's Department of Tourism in collaboration with Outlook Group in celebration of World Tourism Day, IRSTA 2024 highlights the state’s focus on responsible and sustainable tourism as outlined in the Meghalaya Tourism Policy of 2023.

Among the winners, the Sieng Riti Institute, founded by Shri Snar Singh Malngiang, was awarded Gold in the Sustainable Leadership Cultural Ambassadors category. Malngiang emphasized the institute’s mission, based on the pillars of learning, preservation, and imparting indigenous knowledge. “When we started in 2002, only teens aged 17-18 showed interest in learning traditional music and customs. Today, even 6- and 7-year-old children are eager to learn, and our institute now has over 170 young trainees,” he shared.

The Sieng Riti Institute, supported by the local community, educational institutions, and NGOs, has made Wahkhen a cultural hub, drawing visitors and researchers from across the country.

Another awardee, Smt. Vianney Basiewdor Nongrum, honored with the Sustainable Leadership Grassroots Heroes Award, shared her experience: “After studying Fashion and Textile Design, I began working with the talented women weavers of Raid Nongtluh in Ri Bhoi district. These women use natural dyes for weaving, preserving traditional methods. I currently work with 10 women, but many more work under their supervision. This not only generates employment but also fosters a sense of responsibility to preserve our culture.”

Notably, Shillong has been named one of the top trending destinations for 2025, surpassing the historic city of Baku in Azerbaijan, as reported by Skyscanner’s Travel Trends Report. With a strong focus on eco-tourism and upcoming events like the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival on November 15-16, 2024, at RBDSA Sports Complex in Ri Bhoi District, Meghalaya’s government anticipates even more visitors to experience the state’s unique offerings.
