Khyber Turns 65: Mumbai’s Iconic Restaurant Continues Its Timeless Culinary Legacy

In a city that thrives on reinvention, Khyber remains a beacon of tradition and timeless taste, proudly commemorating 65 years of culinary mastery this year. Nestled in the vibrant Kala Ghoda art district, Khyber has become synonymous with authentic North-West Frontier cuisine, consistently delivering rich Mughlai flavours, from velvety Paneer Korma to its regal Khyber Raan. Beyond just a restaurant, it’s a living legacy, beloved by locals and global icons alike.

Founded in 1958 by O.P. Bahl, Khyber’s story mirrors Mumbai’s own spirit of perseverance. From humble beginnings to becoming a dining landmark, its defining moment came in 1985, when a devastating fire struck. Rather than retreat, the Bahl family envisioned a revival. With the creative touch of Parmeshwar Godrej, Khyber re-emerged in 1988, reborn as an opulent dining destination. With hand-carved Rajasthani arches, original art by M.F. Husain and Anjolie Ela Menon, and private alcoves, the space became an immersive experience in itself—elevating standalone fine dining to new heights.

What makes Khyber endure? Its devotion to authenticity. Over 80% of the menu has remained unchanged for decades, lovingly prepared by in-house trained chefs to ensure consistency in every bite. Signature dishes like Tandoori Jhinga, Paneer Korma, and the celebrated Khyber Raan continue to delight patrons, including celebrities such as Paul McCartney, Richard Gere, Amitabh Bachchan, and Aamir Khan.

Sudheer Bahl, who led the restaurant’s rebirth after the fire, reflects, “Completing 65 years is a milestone. What kept us going is simple—respecting our guests and honouring the integrity of the food. My father believed that consistency was key, and that belief has guided us throughout.”

Today, the torch is being carried forward by the third generation, Ishaan Bahl, who is helping shape the restaurant’s future. “The emotional connection people have with Khyber is amazing,” Ishaan shares. “Many guests return for the same dishes they’ve enjoyed for decades. While we’re making thoughtful updates—like redesigning the Husain Room and introducing subtle additions—we’re committed to preserving the core experience our guests cherish.”

As it celebrates 65 glorious years, Khyber invites both longtime patrons and new visitors to experience a culinary institution where tradition meets timeless elegance—a space where every corner holds a story, and every dish, a memory.
