Malaysia Aviation Group Strengthens India Focus, Eyes Growth Ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026

As Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) continues to strengthen its presence in the Indian market, the organisation is strategically aligning its airline, travel, and aviation services portfolios to capitalise on emerging opportunities across South Asia and the ASEAN region. With India being one of the fastest-growing outbound travel markets and a key focus for expansion, MAG—through Malaysia Airlines—is actively enhancing connectivity, forging high-impact partnerships, and supporting major tourism initiatives such as Visit Malaysia Year 2026. In this exclusive interaction, Mr. Dersenish Aresandiran, Chief Commercial Officer of Airlines Business at MAG, shares insights on the airline’s India strategy, evolving market dynamics, and its vision to position Malaysia as a preferred gateway to Southeast Asia.

1. Malaysia Airlines has recently partnered with the Mumbai Indians as its official airline partner. How does this collaboration align with your broader brand strategy in India, and what impact do you anticipate on brand visibility and passenger engagement?

Our partnership with Mumbai Indians reflects Malaysia Airlines’ commitment to building culturally resonant connections in India. Cricket is more than a sport – it’s a unifying passion point and this collaboration allows us to engage audiences in a more meaningful, high-impact way. Beyond brand visibility, it strengthens emotional recall and positions Malaysia Airlines as the airline of choice within India’s highly competitive travel landscape.

2. With Visit Malaysia 2026 on the horizon, what role will Malaysia Airlines play in supporting this initiative, particularly in attracting and facilitating increased tourist traffic from the Indian market?

Visit Malaysia 2026 presents a strong platform to accelerate inbound travel from India, and Malaysia Airlines will play a pivotal role in enabling that growth. We are focused on strengthening connectivity, optimising capacity, and collaborating closely with tourism boards and trade partners to create a seamless, end-to-end travel experience. We aim to make travel more seamless and appealing, while spotlighting Malaysia’s diverse offerings to ensure it remains a preferred destination for Indian travellers.

3. In light of ongoing geopolitical tensions in regions such as the Middle East and parts of Europe affecting airspace and travel sentiment, how do you see Southeast Asian and ASEAN destinations positioning themselves to capture greater tourism demand, and what role will Malaysia Airlines play in this shift?

Amid evolving geopolitical developments affecting certain travel corridors, travellers are increasingly prioritising stability, reliability and ease of access when planning their journeys. Southeast Asia continues to be viewed as a region that offers these attributes, supported by strong connectivity and diverse travel experiences. In this environment, full-service carriers such as Malaysia Airlines play an important role in maintaining network resilience and passenger confidence. We have increased capacity to key European destinations to support continued long-haul access, while strengthening Kuala Lumpur’s position as a key gateway into ASEAN. This enables more assured and seamless connections into cities across the region, underpinned by consistent service standards and a travel experience passengers can rely on.

4. Amidst intensifying competition in the India–ASEAN aviation sector, how is Malaysia Airlines differentiating its offerings in terms of network connectivity, pricing strategies and onboard experience to strengthen its foothold in the Indian market?

In an increasingly competitive India–ASEAN market, differentiation comes from delivering consistent and clarity of value across the entire journey. Malaysia Airlines focuses on offering reliable connectivity through Kuala Lumpur, supported by competitive and flexible fare structures, and a premium onboard experience rooted in Malaysian Hospitality . This allows us to appeal to travellers who are not just price-conscious, but also place importance on comfort, service, and overall travel assurance.

5. India remains a key outbound travel market. Could you elaborate on the strategic partnerships and trade engagement initiatives that Malaysia Airlines is planning with Indian travel agents, tour operators and tourism stakeholders to further drive growth and enhance travel demand to Malaysia and beyond?

India remains a strategically important market, and our approach is centred on building long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships. We are working closely with travel agents, tour operators and industry stakeholders through joint campaigns, targeted training and familiarisation programmes to strengthen product understanding and conversion. These efforts are designed not just to drive immediate demand, but to build sustained preference for Malaysia Airlines and position Malaysia as a gateway to the wider region.
